Episode #26:
Mini Meditators:
Helping Kids Find Their Zen
Â
I’ve had a formal meditation practice for decades and truly credit it for keeping me from becoming a stressed-out, rage filled person who screams about the injustices of the world from every street corner.
Â
So when I was pregnant with my first child, I had visions of teaching them how to meditate before they hit kindergarten. I imagined me and my blissed out three year old chanting mantras while holding mala beads and sending them off to preschool like a little Dalai Lama.
Â
Didn’t quite work out that way. When my kids were younger, they had zero interest in learning how to settle their bodies and calm their minds with their meditating mom. Now that they’re older and understand the brain science behind the benefits of meditation they’re a bit more open, but they’re hardly the Zen masters I’d hoped for.
Â
And that’s ok. Because your kid doesn’t need to sit cross legged, chanting OM while praying for world peace in order to get introduced to the benefits and power of quieting the constant chatter in our brains and connecting to something bigger than ourselves.
Â
On today’s “Good Enough Parenting” podcast, I share the SIMPLE and EASY loving kindness meditation practice we use in our house to calm our bodies & minds, reduce stress, and foster empathy and compassion for ourselves and our communities.
Â
No mala beads or sanskirt words required.
